Service Learning Project - Blankets for Dogs
As a kick off for our Iditarod Adventure we are doing a school wide service project that involves providing blankets that can be used for dogs at the Iditarod checkpoints. When mushers decide that a dog on their team should stay at a checkpoint instead of continuing on, the dog is under the care of volunteer vets. These dogs, referred to as dropped dogs since they've been dropped from a team, get examined, fed and watered, and straw to sleep on until they are flown out of the checkpoint by the Iditarod Air Force.
They also get dog blankets to snuggle under. Mushers have their own blankets to use for their team when they are resting, and the checkpoints use blankets, too, for the dropped dogs.
Our part in the project was to provide 3ft x 3ft pieces of fleece for use as dog blankets. Our Iditarod team cut the fleece for their co-workers. Those squares of fleece will now be passed out to classrooms where teachers will have their students sign the blankets. Once the blankets are signed and returned we will ship them to Anchorage by January 17.
