On our last day in Alaska, we hopped on a school bus for the drive to Willow for the Re-start. We realized once we got there that the event would take place on a frozen lake! There was so much excitement in the air. People were cooking, ice fishing, playing hockey, and riding snow mobiles. We walked about a mile away from the crowds and settled in to watch the race.
Skyping with Ms. Holstien The Musher Banquet We were lucky enough to be invited to the Musher Banquet. At the banquet, the mushers draw for the order in which they will leave the starting point in Willow. We boarded a bus early Wednesday morning and headed for Iditarod Headquarters where Mushers check in and dogs are checked by Vets. We spent a wonderful morning there checking out the Headquarters themselves, playing with dogs and watching the veterinarians check each animal thoroughly. The Headquarters Skyping with Mrs. Wold's Class The Vets Dream a Dream Kennel The kennel is owned by Vern Halter who has run the Iditarod himself.
