So, I have found a way to chart the race with my class that makes sense to me. I have long, beautiful windows in my classroom, and I put up white butcher paper and cut it to look like snow drifts. I then cut out the northern route names and trees and put them in order along the trail, from Anchorage to Nome! I was lucky enough to find a wonderful bulletin board set for the Iditarod on the Teachers Pay Teachers site. I would highly recommend it! So, I went to Cabela's with my mother to buy some winter clothing for our Iditarod adventure. I had never been there before, and when I saw the mounted Alaskan moose on display, I had to snap a photo or two. It reminded me of the late, great Susan Butcher and her dog Granite. What an amazing and courageous woman she was! If you don't know her story....you should. A moose attacked her dogs during the Iditarod in 1985. She went on to win 4 times. Wow! Cancer took her life, but I love that Alaska celebrates "Susan Butcher Day" on the 1st Saturday of March each year. Totally deserving! She is such a great example for my students to persevere and work hard to accomplish your goals. Well, school is cancelled today in Eanes ISD. Why you ask? Because of a little cold and snow. It is 29 degrees here, and we just are not prepared for it! I walked out this morning and took this photo of my car! Is that snow? Wait a minute! I went back inside and looked at the Iditarod web site...it is 38 degrees in Anchorage! What??? It is colder here than in our first stop in Alaska! Well....I guess this is great preparation! I will spend today working on lesson plans and this site for my team and school...and all of you! Stay warm! I made 4 QR codes for every teacher at EES. I chose 4 basic locations that most or all teachers could use for themselves or their students. We are a 1:1 iPad school and district, so our students are very comfortable using QRafter. The codes I chose take you to the Iditarod main site, where you can log in, the Iditarod weather site, with all the checkpoints on the trail, Denali National Park, where the sled dogs are, and this blog, so all students can follow us easily. On our trip, the teachers will show the students our blog daily and videos we create. The PDF is here for anyone to print off and use!
Our "musher" team worked together to prepare the big board in the library to track the mushers voted on by each class. We then did a Nearpod App presentation for the faculty about our Iditarod project. We even handed out Klondike Bars! This helped get everyone in the mood and ready for our adventure! MUSH! This wonderful board is available on TPT and is on our ListLy site of resources! We are having an exciting morning planning for our Alaska trip and the Iditarod! We are working hard to plan and prepare for our teams and bring this awesome experience to EES!!! I am so excited for my kids...but I still need to borrow clothes!!!
